State Reacts to Beshear's Budget Plan

Frankfort, KY – Reaction is coming in to Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear's budget-balancing plan. For one thing, the governor is calling for three-day furloughs for state workers. Beshear says if lawmakers would approve them, furloughs could save the state eight million dollars this fiscal year. Lee Jackson of the Kentucky Association of State Employees says furloughs beat layoffs.

Beshear Seeks Cigarette Tax Increase

Frankfort, KY – With the state facing a 456-million dollar revenue shortfall, Governor Beshear wants to raise the cigarette tax from 30-cents to one dollar per pack. But he says it would be April before the tax could start generating revenue.

"We wouldn't have a full year's source of revenue there. It would produce, we estimate about 81-point-five million dollars."

Graves Couple Charged with Animal Cruelty

Mayfield, KY – A grand jury will decide next week whether or not to indict Joanal and Amy Deberry for breeding dogs for fighting. Graves County Chief Deputy Dewayne Redmon says the two were arrested on November 5 when the police found 72 pit bulls located on their property. A veterinarian examined the animals, finding several scars on their bodies consistent with injuries from dogfighting. The Deberrys are charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty, and Redmon says each defendant could face up to 5 years in prison per charge.

Human Rights Complaints Rise

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Human Rights Commission has received its second largest number of complaints in forty-eight years. Between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008 the commission received 421 discrimination complaints. That's only slightly lower than the 2007 cycle when the state recorded its highest number of complaints. Eighty percent of the filers reported discrimination in employment situations.

McConnell says No Vote Yet on Auto Bailout

Washington, D.C – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says there will be no vote today on a federal bailout of the auto industry. McConnell says Republicans have yet to see the version of the bill agreed upon by Congressional Democrats and the White House.
