Tanner supports COPS Act

Washington, D.C – U.S. Rep. for Tennessee's 8th District John Tanner says he supports today's passage of COPS Improvement Act, which aims to reduce crime through increased police officer employment. The legislation, which could put nearly a thousand new officers on the ground in Tennessee alone, passed the house today by a vote of 342-78. The legislation allows local police departments to apply for grants to fund the hiring of additional officers. The program was first instituted in 1994.

GM Summer Shutdown

Bowling Green, KY – Western Kentucky General Motors employees will feel the pinch this summer as the company plans to temporarily close 13 assembly plants in the U.S. and Mexico. GM officials say the closures are an effort to control growing inventory due to slumping sales. GM North America President Troy Clarke addressed the media this afternoon in a conference call.

"Our goal is to reduce inventory levels from the 767,000 units that we have in the field today to approximately 525,000 by the end of July."

TN House Rejects Handgun Changes

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee House yesterday narrowly rejected Senate changes to a bill to allow people with handgun permits to carry their weapons into establishments that sell alcoholic drinks. House members voted 45-to-44 against the revisions. The changes would not have included an overnight curfew and a ban on bringing guns into age-restricted bars.
