Cracker Barrel Arson Investigation

Murray, Ky – A 19-year-old Cadiz man is in jail after allegedly setting fire to his workplace. Justin Cook is charged with setting fire to the Cadiz Cracker Barrel sometime before 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators found numerous small fires set within the restaurant. Trigg County Tourism Director Bill Stevens says the building sustained moderate damage and will require some repairs. The restaurant is closed until further notice. Cook is charged with second degree arson and is housed in the Christian County Jail.

Region Copes with Fires

Murray, KY – Wildfires blazing in Western Kentucky swallowed up 52 hundred acres of land last weekend, and Division of Forestry officials say more are likely to start. Division Spokeswoman Lynn Brammer says firefighters have been handling outbreaks since the fire season began.

"Throughout the spring forest fire season we've had consistent fires. Almost to the point of on a daily basis unless we've gotten an unusual amount of rainfall."

Feed Ban

Bowling Green, KY – The food and drug administration this week is implementing a new feed ban rule on certain types of livestock feed. The FDA says the move will reduce the chances that mad cow disease could get into the animal feed supply. The ban will restrict the use of animal materials in feed. Kentucky Department of Agriculture Spokesman Bill Clary says that effort is important, but warns that the rule could lead to some un-intended consequences. He says renderers will have less interest in removing dead livestock.

Joblessness Rates Up in KY

Murray, KY – The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training has found unemployment rates are up in all 120 Kentucky counties since last year. McCracken and Calloway Counties reported the lowest March joblessness rates in the region, with just over 8 percent each. Trigg County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state, at 15 point 3 percent. The state unemployment rate rose slightly from last month to 10 point 3 percent.
