Madisonville School Memorial Honors Fallen Soldiers

Madisonville, KY – Students at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School have a new reminder of the price paid by former students in the name of their country. Marine Lance Corporal Tyler Overstreet and Army Sergeant Patrick Rudd, both former students, were both killed in Iraq, and students recently held a ceremony to dedicate a black granite monument in front of the high school honoring the pair.

Election Filing Begins

Frankfort, KY – The candidate filing period for Kentucky elections begins Wednesday and thousands of registrations are expected across the state. Secretary of State spokesperson Les Fugate says presidential mid-term election years are typically the busiest years for cities and counties. And two indicators have him predicting near record filings for next year's races.

Tennessee Leads in Debt Repayments

Nashville, TN – Tennessee is leading the rest of the country when it comes to the number of bankruptcy petitioners who try to repay their debts with court-approved repayment plans. Regional head of the US Bankruptcy Court's Chapter 13 program Kenneth Still says Tennessee residents repay more money to creditors than states such as California. Of the 63,000 Tennessee Chapter 13 cases as of September, 2008, about $558 million was repaid. That amount was highest in the nation, ranking above Texas and Georgia.

Keep it Local Petition Dropped

Murray, KY – The Keep it Local campaign to bring package alcohol sales to the city of Murray is halting petition efforts. Organization co-chair Boone Chambers says although the measure has gained widespread support, the time isn't right to move the issue to a vote. An opposition group, Keep It Out of Murray has also been circulating their own petition against increased alcohol sales. Chambers says stopping the campaign is a compromise between the two organizations. Keep It Out of Murray also plans to back off their petition drive.
