MSU students help Haiti

Murray, KY – Students with Murray State University's American Humanics and Youth & Nonprofit Leadership group are collecting funds to aid those left homeless after the earthquake in Haiti. The Murray Ledger reports that the group is working with the American Red Cross to raise disaster relief aid with funding collected on-campus. Health Department Considers Merger

Elkton, KY – The Health Departments in Christian and Todd County could merge if a proposal under consideration goes forward. The Kentucky New Era reports Todd County Board of Health members last night voted to explore the option. The county's health director resigned a few weeks ago, leaving only an interim staff. The Christian County Board of Health has not yet discussed the issue, but both groups say they will consult the state before making any final decisions.

Civil Rights veteran brings message to Western Ky.

Aurora, Ky. – Colia LaFayette Clark participated in the youth movement of the Civil Rights era and served as a special assistant to Medgar Evers. Her contributions to the freedom movement are noted in more than a dozen books. Ms. Clark will deliver the keynote address Monday, Jan. 18 at Cherokee Historic Resort Park in Aurora, to commemorate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Jacque Day spoke with the lifelong activist, and brings us this interview.

Library Board Debates Opinions

Madisonville, KY – The Madisonville-Hopkins County Public Library Board remains deadlocked on the library's future location. The Madisonville Messenger reports city officials want the library to return to its original downtown location, but Director Lisa Wigley says that's the most expensive option. The board is also considering selling their property and purchasing a new facility. The library moved to a temporary location at the town mall in August due to structural problems at the old location.

Carroll Academy in trouble

Huntington, TN – Budget cuts in Tennessee threaten the livelihood of Huntingdon's Carroll Academy. Carroll Academy is a school for at-risk students. The school will soon lose a little under 650-thousand dollars in state funding. Director Randy Hatch says with the annual budget of 900-thousand dollars, the cut is just too big to survive. The same kind of cut occurred one year ago, and local schools rallied together to pay for the difference. Hatch says they will not close without exhausting all options.

Irvin Cobb Damage Totals +$200k

Paducah, KY – The first damage estimates at the Irvin Cobb Apartments in Paducah will total at least $200,000 and could likely be more. Edgewood Management Property Manager Jason Decapio says 25 residents remain booked at the Thrifty Inn hotel. They're waiting for contractors to finish repairing damage from a ruptured water line among the buildings' second through fourth floors. The windows left open for days after a resident's death have been linked to freezing a fire sprinkler line which flooded the building.
