Clarksville receives ecnomic development award

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville and Montgomery County, Tennessee have received an award for their deal with Hemlock Semiconductor. Business Facilities magazine deemed Clarksville worthy of their 2009 Silver Award for Economic Development Deal of the Year. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports the city-county team won over 19 other national business deals based on the potential economic impact. The $1.2 billion plant is already in construction and should be finished sometime in 2012.

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Senate wants to change how public school principals are hired. Currently, each school's site based council selects the principal. Under a bill approved Tuesday, the council chooses from a list of three names. If no decision is made within three weeks, the school superintendent would have the final say. Paducah Hires Firm to Find New City Manager

Paducah, KY – The city of Paducah has hired an Atlanta-based firm to recruit a new city manager. Jim Mercer of Mercer Group plans to tour Paducah, interviewing city commissioners and directors before conducting the executive search. He expects the process to take three to four months. The candidate will replace former long-time City Manager Jim Zumwalt who resigned earlier this month at the request of city commissioners.

Texting Ban Update

Frankfort, KY – Both houses of the legislature have now acted to ban texting while driving. The senate overwhelming approved a on writing, sending, or reading a text while driving a moving vehicle. The bill also prohibits anyone under age 18 from talking on a cell phone while driving. Warnings would be issued until January and then offenders would face fines ranging from 25 to 50 dollars.
